Retirees Bill and Thelma King walked away winners of a seven-night cruise after visiting the BaptistCare stand at the Sydney Royal Easter Show last year. This year, there will be even more prizes on offer.

When retirees Bill and Thelma King decided to visit the 2018 Sydney Royal Easter Show, they expected to see the usual farm animals, rides and fruit and vegetable displays.

But their day took an unexpected turn for the far more exotic when they won an all-expenses-paid cruise to Tasmania. All it took was a visit to the BaptistCare stand at the show where the pair and their friends entered a raffle, aimed at giving a lucky winner a taste of the good life.

“We couldn’t believe it when we won,” says Thelma, 82, who worked a secretary in a psychiatric clinic before retiring. “We had gone to the show because some friends of ours had a friend out from England who we were helping to show around. When I saw the raffle, I suggested that we all enter. The funny thing is that I also won a $50 voucher at another promotion that day.”

Bill and Thelma’s win entitled them to a seven-night cruise onboard the Norwegian Jewel. Leaving Sydney on December 13, the pair cruised down to historic Hobart before heading north to Burnie. They then sailed up to Melbourne before returning home to Sydney on December 20.

“We had a very nice cabin and the staff were all so lovely,” says Thelma. “Burnie was just so pretty and one of the highlights. And we also had a chance to catch up with our Nephew’s son in Melbourne which was lovely.”

Both Thelma and Bill, who is 82 and a retired refinery senior operator, found the ship easy to navigate. They had no trouble with transfers to and from the vessel. “When there’s a holiday involved, it’s like we’re both 20 years old again,” Thelma jokes.

BaptistCare will be back at the Sydney Royal Easter Show on Senior’s Day on 17 April, 2019.

The BaptistCare stand services a hub for seniors activities on the day. It is also a place of refuge where visitors can escape from the noise and energy of the show. There are seats where you can take a breather and enjoy a free cup of tea or coffee. Visitors can also pick up freebies at the BaptistCare stand.

A BaptistCare chef will be on hand to serve up macarons and freshly baked cookies. For the energetic, there will be games including a giant Jenga set.

The BaptistCare stand is also a place where you can ask for and receive advice on how to live in your home longer. Our experts can offer you tips on downsizing and moving into a retirement community or – if you require a higher level of care – our residential aged care centres.

And there’s good news if you’re feeling lucky! This year, BaptistCare has decided to share the excitement of winning even wider by giving away even more prizes. There will be 10 x $200 Coles Myer vouchers to be won as well as 10 x Event Cinemas Gold Class double passes.

So, come along and try your luck!
