My name is Margaret and support at home gives me quality of life.
I was born in, believe it or not, 1930. I’ve lived on the Central Coast for the last 30 years and I’ve been retired from teaching for 20 years. I have a son who is reasonably close, but no other relatives. I was an only child so I don’t have lots of brothers or sisters or nieces and nephews to come charging around.
I lost the sight of one eye after spending two months in hospital last year. I got DVTs in my leg so now I have to have compression socks put on but I have arthritis in both hands quite badly. So a girl comes in four mornings and she puts my socks on. That is an enormous help. I can’t push a vacuum cleaner around, and without even the sight in one eye now, my balance is not so crash hot.
Do you need help around the home? You may be eligible for government support, or you can find out how much it will cost to get some domestic and personal assistance, as well as to keep you socially engaged by choosing services at youchoose.org.au.
And Baptist Care are very good. They let me have someone to come and do some care a couple of hours a week. They can take me shopping. And I know that when I need the help, I ring the office and someone will come to my aid.
If I have to go to Sydney on Thursday, Baptist Care is going to drive me down and drive me back. Now, that’s you know, remarkable. I am just so grateful for everything they do and their attitude towards me. They don’t treat me like I’m a useless gnarl.
I think without the help, I would probably be restricted to the house. I would be in a constant state of frustration because I couldn’t do things. BaptistCare’s help is tremendous because it makes the difference between living and just existing.
